It occurs when neurons that were once healthy, stop working. Ergo, they lose their connection with other neurons in the brain, and deteriorate.<\/p>\n<p>Dementia affects areas like memory, thinking, comprehension, language and learning. Here are a few signs to be on the lookout for early in dementia:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Memory related<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not being able to recall recent events or information<\/li>\n<li>Not remembering where certain items were kept<\/li>\n<li>Unwitting repetition of comments and\/or questions over short periods of time<\/li>\n<li>Losing track of time; not knowing the correct month or year<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty in performing tasks which they have already done<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Language and Communication:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not being able to find the right words during a conversation<\/li>\n<li>Struggling with vocabulary<\/li>\n<li>Not being able to follow what someone is saying<\/li>\n<li>Reduced attention span<\/li>\n<li>Not being able to follow an instruction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Behavioral\/Mood Related:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shifts in mood and behavior (disorientation, increased irritability, or withdrawal from social situations)<\/li>\n<li>May feel frustrated or anxious<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Losing interest in activities that they used to enjoy<\/p>\n<p>An earlier detection of these signs allows for intervention which in turn improves the quality of life for both patients and caregivers.
